Last week Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla and Gauteng MEC of Health Dr Gwen Ramokgopa welcomed back Cuban-trained medical students who are returning into the country.
The 260 fifth-year medical students returned for their final sixth-year studies and reintegration into the South African health system. The training of the students is one of the national strategies developed by the ministry to strengthen the public health sector.

The Cape Town High Court has ordered the Democratic Alliance to reinstate Patricia de Lille as the executive mayor of the City of Cape Town. On the 1st of July, the top-rated university in Africa will have a new Vice Chancellor. Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng will be only the second woman to fill that post at the University of Cape Town.
She replaces Dr. Max Price, who has held the position since 2008.
Her appointment comes as higher education in general and her institution, in particular, grapples with transformation and the need to advance divergent critical knowledge systems. President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar agreed to a permanent ceasefire and this past weekend an agreement on security drew the country closer to a power-sharing deal and raised hopes of an end to the five-year conflict that has devastated the World's youngest country.
