This year South Africa commemorates the 40th anniversary of the student's uprising of June 16, 1976. The Soweto Uprising was a student led protest which claimed the lives of 176 people, at least 23 deaths occured on the first day with thousands reported injuries. The police ordered township ­hospitals to report anyone receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, but doctors listed the wounds as abcesses. The protests began in Soweto schools and spread across the country. The unrest was a response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction.
