As we celebrate youth day it's important to remember those that sacrificed their lives for our freedom in the Soweto Uprising on this day in 1976. An event that reverberated across the world and changed the course of history in South Africa.

South Africa is marking 40 years since the Soweto student uprising, which marked a pivotal turn in the fight against apartheid. As the nation looks back on the tragic, violent protests, both old and young say their nation is better for it but still far from perfect.

People in South Africa have celebrated the 40th anniversary of Youth Day, the start of the Soweto uprising. Thousands of school students were protesting the use of Afrikaans as the language of instruction because they viewed it to be the language of the oppressor. The military opened fire on them and killed hundreds of people over the following days and weeks as the protests spread.

Africa’s youth face various problems ranging from unemployment, human trafficking, among others. It is believed that defining, developing the right economic and political environments as well as involving them in policy formulation would be a key response.

Challenges faced by the youth today

The Soweto Massacre marked a watershed moment in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. Thousands of students mobilized against a decree of Afrikaans as an official language of instruction in schools and police responded by shooting into the crowds killing dozens of people.

In South Africa, 41 years after the Soweto's uprising, the cost of the fight for quality education and freedom in the country is told through a documentary film directed by Sifiso Khanyile titled UPRIZE. The film debuted at the Encounters film festival and is now set to take on more screens in and around South Africa. CGTN's Julie Scheier has more.

And still in South Africa, thirty seven years ago, a massacre during the Apartheid rule the world. Nearly 200 students lost their lives in a protest against the introduction of Afrikaans and English as the only languages of school instruction. June 16th is now celebrated as the Youth Day to commemorates the bravery of the students.

South Africa is remembering one of the darkest days in its history. It's been 40 years since the Soweto Uprisings, which began when Apartheid police opened fire on thousands of black students. They were marching against being taught in Afrikaans. The massacre inspired millions of South Africans to fight against the repressive Apartheid government.

This year's main Youth Day celebrations will be in Ventersdorp in the North West. A small town that was once the base of The Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging - an Afrikaner movement which opposed the ending of apartheid. It was put in the spotlight in 2010, when AWB founder and leader, Eug?ne Terre'Blanche, called this town home.

At Youth Day celebrations in George, the focus was on arts and culture, more specifically the Khoisan culture.

It is said that the image of the late Sam Nzima's shot of Hector Pieterson was the most iconic image that shook the world during the apartheid regime. Yet, the horrific day that was 16 June 1976 was also lived by various photojournalists who live to tell their tales of the march they found themselves in.

June the 16th will never be the same for seventy six Northern Cape families.They will receive houses to mark the 38th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto uprising. The beneficiaries from Lindelani in Galeshewe are single mothers, disabled persons and child-headed households.

This year South Africa commemorates the 40th anniversary of the student's uprising of June 16, 1976. The Soweto Uprising was a student led protest which claimed the lives of 176 people, at least 23 deaths occured on the first day with thousands reported injuries. The police ordered township ­hospitals to report anyone receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, but doctors listed the wounds as abcesses. The protests began in Soweto schools and spread across the country. The unrest was a response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction.

SA President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address at a National Youth Day event at the Peter Mokaba Cricket Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

EFF leader, Julius Malema delivered the keynote address at Youth Day celebrations at the University of Fort Hare in Alice in the Eastern Cape. Malema touched on challenges young people face, particularly unemployment and challenges in education.

As the country continues to battle with constant service delivery protests, schools remain a prime target. Since 2016, almost fifty schools have been burnt down. We spoke to June 16th, activist Seth Mazibuko, who says there is a disconnect between the youth of forty years ago and the youth of today.

Today marks start of the youth month and unemployment and substance abuse feature quite strongly among the challenges faced by youths today.

It has been 44 years since the Soweto uprising that changed the history of South Africa and its educational system. South Africa, now a democratic state, continues to experience the legacy of the apartheid system.
